Soon every third German is too fat, already our children are considered “moppelige ” movement muffles and fight against the side effects of fat pads such as high blood pressure, heart fat and “age sugar .” Ever new diet programs promise quick, long-term successful weight losing weight with uninhibited eating pleasure. One of the current phenomena is called the “Glyx Diet .” A cute name behind which the abbreviation for “glycemic index ” (GI) hides.
What is the GI?
The GI describes how quickly a food consisting of carbohydrates is digested in the human body and released into the blood as sugar. A high GI means blood sugar levels rise rapidly. This is the case, for example, with glucose. For this reason, glucose was assigned to the GI value 100. Mashed potatoes, polished rice and lemonade also cause blood sugar to rise rapidly and therefore have a high GI.
A low GI means the food is digested more slowly and blood sugar levels rise slowly. Whole grains, apples and legumes are among these foods recommended as part of the Glyx diet.
The role of insulin
Proponents of glyx diet theory blame a hormone for superfluous pounds: Insulin, a hormone of the pancreas. As blood sugar levels rise, the body releases insulin to transport the sugar to the cells as quickly as possible, where it is burned as fuel or serves as an energy reserve.
Insulin also ensures that as long as blood sugar levels are sufficiently high, no storage fat reserves are attacked. This is allegedly why foods with a high GI are so bearing down on the hips and abdomen. No one has yet been able to prove this connection.
The crowd does it!
Yet it’s not insulin that makes us fat. Rather, it is the energy balance between food intake and energy consumption: If the blood sugar that comes from food is not consumed, it is deposited as storage. And that, whether he has come into the blood slowly or quickly. Allegedly, low-GI foods are supposed to last longer. But this, too, has not been proven. Rather, some researchers believe it is the higher protein content in the Glyx diet that hinders hunger.
Who is the GI really important for?
Originally, the classification of carbohydrates was introduced into groups of varying levels of GI for the nutrition of diabetics whose blood sugar levels can no longer be regulated by the pancreas. It is important for them to know how quickly the blood sugar will increase following a meal, so that they can quickly carry insulin via syringe. For healthy people, according to critics of the Glyx diet, the GI is not important.
Why is the Glyx diet still successful?
If you take a close look at the diet of the Glyx diet, you will find many components of a full-fledged, versatile diet: Whole grains, fresh fruit, protein-rich legumes. Even without the glycemic index, it is clear that these foods are more beneficial than potato chips and twitchy sodas. Some nutritionists even warn against removing important foods such as rice or carrots from the meal plan altogether for fear of an unfavorable GI. They contain important minerals, vitamins and trace elements.
Deceptive calculation errors
The following comparison shows how deceptive the glycemic index can be in some cases: If one strictly follows the GI guidelines, 100 grams of chocolate should make less thick than the same amount of mashed potatoes, since chocolate, thanks to its fat content, the better GI Has.
