7 Best Weight Loss Pills with Proven Effects

You have probably read about weight loss pills or diet pills in your quest to lose weight, or maybe you’ve used them by now. There are hundreds of types of weight loss pills on the market, but only a handful of weight loss supplements have been scientifically proven, contributing to weight loss (and in the context of an energy-restricted diet).

Are all those great promises about weight loss pills and fat burners based on the truth or is it pure marketing? In this article, you will discover the best weight loss pills that have a proven effect.

Types of Weight Loss Pills

Roughly, there are 3 different types of weight loss pills on the market

If you take a closer look at the existing weight loss pills/diet pills that are freely available, one thing immediately strikes you.

The active substance is in most cases one or more of these three:

  • Moisture dissipators
  • Artificial dietary fibers
  • Caffeine-like substances

These three substances seem to be able to help you lose weight. But does it really work? Let’s take a closer look at each of the substances:

Weight loss pills/diet pills with moisture-dispersing substances

Most weight loss pills also contain dehydrating ingredients. In most cases, these are natural plant extracts such as nettle, parsley, celery, juniper, birch leaf and/or dandelion. Spices and herbs are also used for this.

The result of these additives is that your body retains less moisture, so you have to go to the toilet more often.

Weight loss pills/diet pills with artificial fibers

In most cases, dietary fiber is found in weight loss pills. Dietary fibers have the property of absorbing water in your stomach, causing them to swell.

In this way, you will get a quick reaction in your stomach and you will stop eating sooner. The fibers themselves contain no calories at all, so you don’t have to worry about that.

Weight Loss pills/diet pills with caffeine-like substances

Slimming pills are available that include caffeine, or at least caffeine-like substances. Ingesting these substances increases your metabolism a little, and speeds up your heartbeat a little.

Caffeine also acts as a strong boost, just like regular coffee. You’re getting a little more active. It is indeed true that this has an effect on burning excess fat, but it only takes a very short time.

But to get the same effect next time, you have to take more and more of the same active ingredient, because your body will get used to it. But the more you take of it, the stronger the side effects will manifest themselves.

After all, there are a number of important side effects associated with the use of caffeine and caffeine-like substances. I’ll go in later.

Wondering which weight loss pills work to lose weight?

I researched 13 of the most common weight loss pills and supplements on the market especially for you. In this article, you will read an honest summary of what works, what doesn’t, and why.

This way you save a lot of time, energy and money on weight loss products that do not work or hard work at all.

7 best weight loss pills with proven effect

Let’s start with the best weight loss pills and supplements that have a proven effect. By ‘proven’ I don’t necessarily mean conclusively proven because the studies are often quite small-scale and sometimes sponsored.

In short, there are at least indications that they have an actual effect on slimming such as a faster metabolism/combustion.

7 Best Weight Loss Pills

#1: Glucomannan – my personal favorite

Glucomannan is a water-soluble dietary fiber derived from the root of a plant called konjac. The plant grows in the warm subtropical regions of East Asia. I hear you say it, gluco-man-nan. Well, a tricky term…

In many Western countries glucomannan as a dietary fiber has recently received media attention because it supports weight loss in following a low-calorie diet. Although I myself do not like to go along with temporary media hypes, I find this supplement a valuable supplement for people who want to lose weight.

How does glucomannan work?

The strength of glucomannan lies in its contribution to reduced appetite and an increased feeling of satiety. The fibers of glucomannan absorb a lot of water in the intestines and then become gelatinous. This slows down the emptying of the stomach.

The beneficial effect for weight loss is obtained at three doses of 3 g of glucomannan each of 1 g (a total of 6 capsules per day), together with 1-2 glasses of water, before meals and in the context of an energy-restricted diet.

The beneficial effect that contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels is obtained with a daily intake of 4 g of glucomannan (a total of 8 capsules per day).

Possible side effects

Side effects are rare, a small proportion of users experience abdominal pain, including diarrhea or constipation. In this case, it is advisable to stop immediately. As mentioned before, the intention is always to take the product with plenty of water and not to use more than 4 g glucomannan (8 capsules) per day.

Do you want to lose weight on a pill?

An effective and powerful supplement that supports weight loss is glucomannan. This is because the fibers of glucomannan absorb a lot of water and thus contribute to reduced appetite and an increased feeling of satiety.

Find out exactly how glucomannan works and how Christien lost weight and got a tighter belly.

#2: Omega 3 fatty acids

Unlike trans fats, omega 3 fatty acids are incredibly healthy. Different species of fish are rich in omega 3 fatty acids. If good health is important to you, you don’t want to cut back on omega 3 (but you do want to cut back on trans fats!).

In particular, the active fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) provide many health benefits. These active fatty acids reduce your cortisol level (stress), stimulate fat burning and suppress appetite (source, source, source).

How does omega 3 work?

Omega 3 fatty acids occur naturally in salmon, mackerel, herring and tuna. Omega 3 fatty acids play a crucial role in the brain and retina of the eyes.

Several studies have shown that omega 3 fatty acids can have protective effects against all kinds of diseases, such as breast cancer, depression, ADHD and various chronic inflammatory diseases (source, source, source).

And what’s the connection with losing weight?

Omega 3 can contribute to weight loss in several ways, such as reducing hunger and appetite. This can be particularly useful if you are on a strict diet and are starting to feel hungry.

Another way omega 3 can help you lose weight is by temporarily increasing your metabolism. Research suggests that consuming omega 3 can also increase the number of calories and the amount of fat you burn while exercising (source).

Weight Loss results

A small-scale study investigated the effect of fish oil on healthy young adults. The subjects were given 6 grams of fish oil per day for 12 weeks. At the end of the study, the metabolic rate of the participants had increased by almost 4% (source).

Similar results were found in another investigation.

Healthy older women had to take 12 grams of fish oil a day for 3 months. It turned out that the metabolism had increased by about 14%, which corresponds to burning 187 calories per day (source).

  • Fish oil supplements appear to be particularly effective in combination with sport and exercise.

Research shows that women who were given 3 grams of fish oil per day for 3 months burned up to 27% more fat if they were physically active. However, other studies have shown that omega 3 does not affect the energy source (carbohydrates or fats) used during exercise (source, source).

More research is therefore needed before strong conclusions can be drawn.

Possible side effects

Fish oil with omega 3 fatty acids is considered safe. Among the most recent studies, daily doses of 300 to 3000 mg were used. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the intake of omega 3 fish oil is considered safe if the daily dosage does not exceed 3,000 mg per day.

However, EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) considers the daily intake of up to 5000 mg from supplements to be safe (source).

  • Be careful with the kind of fish oil supplement you take. Some supplements are rich in vitamin A, which in large quantities can be harmful for children and pregnant women.

Where can you buy it?

Omega 3 capsules can be bought at various drugstores, but can also be ordered easily via the internet.

Average price

The price of omega 3 varies between 6,- and 30,- euro, depending on the brand you buy.

Conclusion

To get the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, I recommend eating fatty fish at least twice a week. If you don’t like oily fish, consider taking a supplement like krill oil. To get the most health benefits from omega-3 supplements, it is important that you choose one that contains at least 50% EPA and DHA.

Another option is fish oil, but you can start farming that. Are you a vegetarian? Then you can have algae oil.

#3: Green tea extract

Green tea extract is the concentrated form of green tea. It is made from the leaves of the camellia sinensis, a tea plant.

Green tea extract has been extracted. This is an operation in which substances are separated from each other. In this way, you end up with only the active substances of the tea plant that are highly concentrated. These powdered active substances are then the extract.

How does green tea extract work?

Many of the health benefits of green tea and green tea extract are related to polyphenols. Green tea contains 30-40% polyphenols. Polyphenols are molecules that plants produce to protect themselves from radiation and various pathogenic microorganisms.

There are several polyphenols, and the green tea plant is particularly rich in catechins. There are different types of catechins. Green tea contains a large amount of the potent catechin epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).

From EGCG you should know that it is a powerful antioxidant. This unique substance can offer protection against free radicals, and therefore protection against cell damage.

Most green tea extract supplements contain a reasonable amount of caffeine (in tea, caffeine is also called theine), of which a moderate amount is thought to contribute to a positive state of mind (source, source).

And what’s the connection with weight loss?

A meta-analysis (cluster of studies) shows that the intake of green tea extract helps to slightly increase fat burning (source). Of both catechins and caffeine, researchers have found that it has a reinforcing effect on thermogenesis (source, source).

In a study among 60 obese participants, the group that took green tea extract lost 2.7 kg and had an increase in their metabolism of 61 calories per day after 3 months (source).

Another 12-week study found a weight loss of 1.1 kg and a reduction of 0.4 BMI in overweight women who took 856 mg EGCG daily while they did not differ significantly in the placebo group (source).

Possible side effects

Green tea extract is generally well tolerated and considered safe. It contains some caffeine and can cause symptoms in people who are sensitive to caffeine.

Where can you buy it?

Green tea extract supplements are for sale at various drugstores, but can also easily be ordered via the internet.

Average price

The price of green tea extract varies between 6,- and 30,- euro, depending on the brand you buy.

Conclusion

As the research results show, a small positive effect of green tea extract with EGCG can be found on weight loss. Some studies have found modest effects, while others have found no significant difference.

Also keep in mind that taking green tea extract with ECGC is only useful if you also follow a healthy diet and make time for exercise.

#4: Green coffee extract

Green coffee extract comes from coffee beans that have not been roasted. In addition to caffeine, coffee beans contain chlorogenic acid (CGA) and antioxidants.

These two substances are believed to help with weight loss by stimulating fat burning and increasing metabolism.

Roasting coffee reduces the chlorogenic acid content. That makes raw coffee beans healthier. Green coffee beans are actually ordinary coffee beans that have not yet been roasted and processed.

Chlorogenic acid is not only found in coffee beans. It is also found in potatoes, peaches, pears, apples, strawberries, blueberries, etc.

How does green coffee extract work?

The greatest effect of chlorogenic acid is reduced blood pressure. Regular consumption of food containing chlorogenic acid was also found to reduce the risk of gallstones if the daily intake is high enough.

In case of prolonged intake, it can reduce glucose uptake in the intestines. This can potentially lead to weight loss. Caffeine in green coffee beans can increase fat burning.

Slimming results

It has been established that green coffee extract can help lower blood sugar levels and improve blood pressure (source, source). It is an antioxidant, so it helps prevent free radicals and cellular damage.

It might help with losing weight, but there is no really strong evidence (yet).

Several human studies have shown that green coffee bean extract can help with weight loss, but the results were not spectacular.

An overview study shows that participants who took the weight loss pill lost up to 2.5 kg more body weight than the placebo group (source).

Possible side effects

Green coffee extract can cause the same side effects as caffeine. The chlorogenic acid in it can also cause diarrhea, and some people may be allergic to green coffee beans (source).

Where can you buy it?

The weight loss pill is for sale at various drugstores, but can also be ordered easily via the internet.

Average price

The price of the Green coffee extract varies between 10,- and 18,- euro, depending on the brand you buy.

Conclusion

Green coffee bean extract can cause modest weight loss, but keep in mind that many of the studies have been sponsored by companies who wish to promote their own products in this way.

Adding green coffee extract to your diet can’t hurt, but don’t count it as a panacea to stimulate fat burning.

#5: Orlistat (brand names Xenical or Alli)

Orlistat is a medicine and is marketed in most countries. You can get it in the United States and the United Kingdom without a prescription.

It has mild anti-hypertensive properties, but its main effect is to reduce the amount of fat that is digested in the intestines.

How does Orlistat work?

This weight loss pill works by inhibiting the breakdown of fats in the intestine, so you take less calories from fat (1 gram of fat provides 9 kcal).

Weight loss results

Clinical studies have shown that Orlistat does indeed provide modest weight loss, provided it is taken for some time.

It prevents the absorption of about 25% of the fat in food.

An overview study in which 11 studies were examined shows that the use of Orlistat results in up to 2.7 kg more weight loss compared to a placebo (source).

Orlistat has also been shown to lower blood pressure slightly and to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by 37% (source, source).

Possible side effects

This medicine can cause side effects on the digestive system, including flatulence and liquid and frequent stools. It can also contribute to a deficiency in fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin A, vitamin D, E, and K.

To minimize side effects it is recommended to follow a low fat diet while using Orlistat.

Where can you buy it?

Orlistat has been available in the United States without a prescription since 2006. In the Netherlands it is only available on prescription from the pharmacy.

Average price

The recommended retail price of 90 capsules (60 mg each) is around 60,- euro.

Conclusion

Users of the drug lose 1.8 to 2.7 kg more body weight per year than non-users. There is also usually a mild improvement in blood pressure.

Orlistat works as a weight loss pill, but for real weight loss results it must be combined with diet and exercise.

Interestingly, research has shown that a carbohydrate low-carb diet is just as effective as a low-fat diet combined with Orlistat weight loss pills (source).

#6: Meratrim

Many medicines and supplements used for weight loss are often accidentally discovered.

This was also the case with Meratrim.

Meratrim is a combination of two plant extracts that can change the fat metabolism.

The primary ingredient is the Sphaeranthus indicus plant.

The flower of the plant has been used for centuries in traditional Indian medicine.

The second ingredient is the mangistan plant (other name is garcinia mangostana).

This species is of the same family as garcinia cambogia and is a fairly versatile plant.

The inside of the fruit is often eaten, while the dried fruit can be used to turn it into a black dye.

The bark is used to treat dysentery (heavy form of diarrhea).

In Meratrim, extracts of these two natural herbs are combined in a ratio of 3:1.

How does Meratrim work?

Meratrim is said to make it harder for fat cells to multiply.

Also, Meratrim fat cells would help to burn stored fat and reduce the amount of fat that fat cells absorb from the bloodstream (source).

Please note that this test was done in a test tube study.

What happens in a human body can often be completely different from what happens in isolated cells.

Slimming results

So far, only one study has been done on Meratrim.

A total of 100 obese participants (23 men and 77 women) were placed on a strict diet of 2000 calories, with Meratrim or a placebo (source).

The participants were instructed to walk 30 minutes a day.

Meratrim group: the participants took 400 mg Meratrim, 30 minutes before breakfast and dinner (a total of 800 mg).

Placebo group: the placebo group took 400 mg of placebo at the same time instead.

After 2 months, the Meratrim group had lost 5.2 kg body weight and lost almost 12 cm in waist. The participants also had a reduction in blood sugar levels, cholesterol and triglycerides.

The placebo group lost 1.5 kg body weight and 6 cm in waist circumference.

In short, the Meratrim group lost 3.5 times as much body weight and 2 times as much fat from their waist compared to the placebo group.

These are impressive results, but the bad news is that the research was sponsored by InterHealth, the company that produces and sells Meratrim.

Of course, this does not mean that the research is useless, but it is important to keep in mind.

It is known that sponsored research can influence the research results (source, source).

Possible side effects

No side effects were noted in the study. The study used 800 mg Meratrim per day.

Where can you buy it?

The weight loss pill can be ordered via the internet.

Average price

The price of Meratrim varies between 30,- and 50,- dollars, depending on the brand you buy.

Conclusion

Meratrim could be a useful tool to speed up weight loss in the short term. But it has to be taken into account that the research only lasted 8 weeks and was sponsored.

It is unclear whether the slimming pill will have an effect in the long term. And as always with weight loss pills, you will only see results if you make a lasting change in lifestyle and eating habits.

#7: Synephrine (Citrus Aurantium)

Around the turn of the century, most weight loss pills consisted of a combination of caffeine and ephedrine.

Ephedrine was not yet banned in those days and was very popular as a slimming agent.

It stimulated fat burning, but also had side effects with harmful consequences (e.g. high blood pressure and cardiac dysrhythmia).

Synephrine is related to ephedrine, but less potent. This substance is found in oranges in a very low concentration, and is extracted from unripe oranges by a drying process.

How does synephrine work?

Synephrine increases energy levels, reduces appetite and can temporarily increase metabolism (source).

Slimming results

Few studies have been done on synephrine, ephedrine has been shown to help with weight loss (source).

Synephrine increases (just like ephedrine) the energy consumption in idle state.

A study shows that synephrine has an influence on resting metabolism, blood pressure and heart rate. There were also mood swings among the participants.

The most striking thing about this research was that synephrine, especially in combination with naringin and hesperidin (bioflavonoids), works well as a slimming pill (source).

Possible side effects

Like ephedrine, synephrine can have serious side effects associated with heart disease. It can also be addictive.

Where can you buy it?

Synephrine can be ordered over the internet as a weight loss pill.

Average price

The price varies between 25,- and 50,- euro, depending on the brand you buy.

Conclusion

Synephrine is probably effective for weight loss, but more research is needed. This slimming pill also has side effects, so caution is advised.

Consult your doctor first if you want to use synephrine.

6 insufficient / poorly proven slimming pills

#1: Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)

Conjugated linoleic acid is an omega-6 fatty acid that occurs naturally in beef and dairy products.

CLA is marketed as an aid for strength training and bodybuilding.

According to the manufacturers, this substance can reduce the loss of muscle mass and will burn body fat more efficiently.

In mice, a link has been found between CLA and cancer prevention.

CLA also seems to be beneficial for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes.

How does CLA work?

CLA can reduce appetite, stimulate metabolism and stimulate the breakdown of body fat (source, source).

Slimming results

Some studies in humans have shown a significant improvement in weight loss, while others have shown no difference at all.

An overview article of 18 different studies shows that CLA can help a little with losing weight. An average weight loss of about 0.1 kg per week was observed in the first 6 months (source).

Another review study also confirms that CLA causes a modest weight loss: about 1.3 kg compared to a placebo (source).

So the slimming results are modest.

Possible side effects

CLA is considered safe. There are no known side effects in the recommended dosages. Possibly CLA reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer (source, source).

In the studies a daily amount of 3 to 3.5 grams of CLA was taken.

Where can you buy it?

The weight loss pill is for sale at various drugstores, but can also be ordered easily via the internet.

Average price

The price of CLA varies between 7,- and 40,- euro, depending on the brand you buy.

Conclusion

Some studies have shown a link between CLA and weight loss, while others have shown no difference at all.

It doesn’t hurt to use it as a weight loss pill, but don’t expect miracles with CLA.

In addition, the results may vary depending on the source. Avoid the synthetic variants often found in supplements.

#2: L-carnitine

Products containing carnitine are often claimed to increase metabolism and improve your performance.

Carnitine is produced in the liver and kidneys by two amino acids: lysine and methionine.

Carnitine is stored in the skeletal muscles, brain and heart. In men, carnitine is also stored in the sperm.

How does carnitine work?

Carnitine plays a role in fat metabolism because it is responsible for transporting fats to the mitochondria, where they can be burned for energy.

Because carnitine helps to move more fatty acids to your cells to be burned, you might think that a higher concentration of carnitine may help to stimulate fat burning.

Slimming results

Carnitine is often seen as a way to lose unwanted pounds and lose weight quickly. In combination with healthy diet and exercise, some studies have shown that carnitine can help with weight loss.

However, slimming results may vary as different studies have yielded mixed results.

In one study 38 women were divided into two groups. One group took a carnitine supplement, while the other group had a placebo. Both groups conducted eight practice sessions per week for eight weeks.

The researchers found no difference in weight loss between the two groups. Remarkably, five participants who took carnitine became nauseous or had diarrhoea (source).

Another study investigated the effect of carnitine on fat burning. Participants were given carnitine or a placebo and were subjected to a 90-minute cycle training for 4 weeks.

At the end of the study no differences between the groups were observed.

In a study of male bodybuilders, carnitine had no effect on body weight and fat mass (source). The bodybuilders took 1 gram of carnitine per day for 60 days.

Possible side effects

A dosage of 2 grams of carnitine is safe for most people. Some people got nausea or diarrhea. Harmful side effects are not known.

Where can you buy it?

Carnitine is for sale at various drugstores, but can also easily be ordered via the internet.

Average price

The price of carnitine varies between 7,- and 20,- euro, depending on the brand you buy.

Conclusion

Although carnitine is known for its fat-burning properties, several studies have shown that it is less spectacular than is thought. Carnitine does not seem to be very suitable as a slimming pill. The use of carnitine does have other health benefits.

Research has shown that acetyl L-carnitine, another form of L-carnitine, could help inhibit the deterioration of brain functions in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (source).

#3: Garcinia Cambogia Extract / HCA (hydroxy citric acid)

Garcinia Cambogia only gained international fame when it was promoted as a slimming tool by Dr. Oz.

Dr. Oz is a well-known American doctor and was a regular special guest at Oprah Winfrey’s show.

Garcinia Cambogia is a small green fruit, in the shape of a pumpkin.

It’s all about the skin of the fruit, which contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA).

This is the active ingredient in Garcinia Cambogia extract, which was marketed as a slimming pill.

How does Garcinia Cambogia work?

In sufficient quantities, HCA blocks a fat-producing enzyme called citrate lysase, making it more difficult for the body to make extra fat.

It can also increase the amount of serotonin in the brain, which can lead to decreased appetite (source).

Slimming results

However, a study among 130 participants shows less spectacular results. One group got the garcinia Cambogia pill and the other a placebo.

At the end of the investigation, there appeared to be no difference in weight or body fat percentage between the two groups (source).

A review study, which examined 12 studies of Garcinia Cambogia, showed that using the supplement for a number of weeks resulted in a weight loss of 0.9 kg (source).

Possible side effects

Garcinia Cambogia is considered safe. There are no known side effects in the recommended dosages.

Where can you buy it?

The price of Garcinia Cambogia extract varies between 15,- and 30,- euros, depending on the brand you buy.

Conclusion

Research has yielded few spectacular slimming results. Even at high doses, Garcinia Cambogia has no effect on fat burning, it makes the storage of new fat only slightly more difficult.

Although Garcinia Cambogia can cause a modest weight loss, the effects are so small that they are unlikely even to be noticeable.

#4: Hydroxycut

The vast majority of weight loss pills and supplements produced to help with weight loss contain caffeine.

This is because caffeine has a positive effect on your metabolism.

Hydroxycut consists of several weight loss supplements, but almost all of them contain a lot of caffeine, just like Coleus Extract, forskolin and green coffee extract.

How does Hydroxycut work?

It contains several ingredients that are claimed to help with weight loss, including caffeine and a few plant extracts.

Caffeine gives a temporary increase in resting metabolism (BMR), which causes your body to burn more calories when at rest.

Caffeine also suppresses drowsiness, making you more likely to remain active.

Slimming results

The Hydroxycut supplements have the name as a fat burner. But can they live up to the name?

The fact that Hydroxycut does not provide references is questionable.  After a long search, I found a study evaluating the effects of the Weighlevel supplement.

Weighlevel contains the main ingredients of Hydroxycut.

Participants were instructed to eat three meals a day for 12 weeks and to take a Weighlevel weight loss pill 30 minutes before meals (source). At the end of the study, the BMI average had been reduced from 28 to 24 among the 60 participants who completed the study.

However, because there was no placebo group, we don’t know whether the weight loss was due to the weight loss pills or simply due to eating ‘cleaner’ food.

Possible side effects

If you’re sensitive to caffeine, this supplement is not for you. It can cause side effects such as nausea, anxiety attacks, tremors, diarrhea and irritability.

You can also develop a tolerance for caffeine over time. Increasing the dosage to achieve the same effects can produce results in a number of unpleasant side effects, including nervousness, insomnia, palpitations and decreased coordination.

Where can you buy it?

Hydroxycut supplements can be ordered over the internet.

Conclusion

Because little research has been done on Hydroxycut, we do not know whether the claims about the effectiveness of Hydroxycut are true. Additional research is needed to draw the right conclusion.

Caffeine supplements are known to temporarily increase resting metabolism.

As long as you stick to the recommended amount, weight loss pills that contain a lot of caffeine are harmless. But consuming too much caffeine can lead to unpleasant side effects or caffeine tolerance.

#5: Raspberry ketone

Raspberry ketone is the primary aromatic structure of red raspberries.

It is a substance found in raspberries and is responsible for their pronounced smell.

It is also found in cranberries and blackberries.

It is used as a natural flavoring but is also one of the most expensive natural flavorings available due to the low concentrations of the substance actually found in raspberries.

A synthetic version of raspberry ketones is sold as a slimming supplement.

How does Raspberry ketone work?

In isolated fat cells of rats, raspberry ketones increase the breakdown of fat and values of a hormone called adiponectin, which is thought to be associated with weight loss (source).

Slimming results

There is no evidence that raspberry ketones cause weight loss in humans. One study of rats has shown that it can help with losing weight. The rats were given high doses (source).

Possible side effects

If you would like to mimic the study done on the mice, you should get at least 12 grams of this substance a day.

However, do not expect this to end well. Raspberry ketones have been shown to increase body temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate when used excessively.

Where can you buy it?

The weight loss pills are easy to order over the internet. There’s no need for a doctor’s prescription.

Average price

The recommended retail price of 180 capsules is 65,- euro.

Conclusion

The only reason why raspberry ketone is sold as a weight loss pill is that a study on mice showed that the weight gain can be controlled.

The popular Dr. Oz Show has made this weight loss pill known to the general public in America. However, there is no evidence that it also works for people.

Apparently, one study among rats and an American TV personality is enough to get a non-working weight loss pill on the weight loss market.

#6: Forskolin

Forskolin comes from the Coleus forskohlii plant.

The plant grows in different parts of the world and is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of heart disease, digestive problems and even hangovers.

Forskolin is claimed to be effective for losing weight. It received international attention after it was promoted by Dr. Oz as a slimming aid.

How does forskolin work?

Forskolin has been shown in studies with rats to stimulate the release of stored fat from fat cells (source, source). Forskolin stimulates the release of stored fat from fat cells, an effect that does not necessarily cause weight loss.

Slimming results

A study of 30 overweight men showed that forskolin lowered the fat percentage, but the body weight did not change (source).

In another forskolin study among 23 women, no fat loss was observed (source).

However, there are important comments. First of all, forskolin only causes fat loss if you already have a calorie deficiency, i.e. if you eat fewer calories than you burn daily.

Secondly, most of the forskolin studies that showed positive results have been carried out on animals. Studies in humans have yielded mixed results. Better results were observed in obese men than in women.

Possible side effects

Forskolin is considered safe. There are no known side effects in the recommended dosages.

Where can you buy it?

Forskolin supplements (forskolin naturals, forslean, etc.) can easily be ordered at dozens of online drugstores.

Conclusion

Coleus Forskohlii is an herb that can be used for various purposes. However, it has not been proven in black and white that its use can help with body weight loss.

Slimming pills combined with diet and exercise

So, they all were!

It may surprise you that there are so many different popular weight loss supplements on the market that are hardly supported by scientific research.

Good marketing and sky-high expectations can do a lot with a slimming product.

They are just a handful of weight loss pills that have proven to stimulate fat burning and support weight loss.

That said, the slimming pills that do work are far from ‘miracle pills’.

It is important to realize that no slimming pill magically burns fat as long as you live unhealthily and barely move.

Ultimately, no diet pill or weight loss supplement can compensate for an unhealthy lifestyle.

Slimming pills should be more of an addition (not a replacement), just like supplements are.

Only in combination with a healthy diet and sufficient exercise can a weight loss supplement be truly effective. And only under these conditions can you expect to lose weight and maintain your target weight.

In the video below I share the 7 best ways to speed up your metabolism:
